Commentaire

Quels hits? ceux des Red Hot bien sûr. 8 ans après la parution de leur premier LP éponyme, les Californiens jettent un regard dans le rétroviseur en compilant une série de hits. A défaut d\'avoir été de véritables tubes ( à l'exception de Give It Away et d'Under The Bridge), ces 18 titres constituentun bon résumé de la carrière des Red Hot Chili Peppers. Les débuts tumultueux du groupe sont présents avec True Men Don't Kill Coyotes (tirée du premier album) et Catholic School Girls Rule (de Freaky Styley). La période intermédiaire (Uplift Mofo Party Plan et Mother's Milk) est également restituée avec des titres plus maîtrisés comme Behind The Sun et Knock Me Down. Curieusement, What Hits ? n'offre qu'un seul titre de Blood Sugar Sex Magik (Under The Bridge) négligeant ainsi Give It Away, une manoeuvre expliquée par le fait que cette compilation est éditée par EMI (l'ancienne maison de disques des RHCP) qui n'a aucun droit sur l\'album Blood Sugar Sex Magik édité par Warner/Wea. A noter la présence d'un inédit (Show Me Your Soul, extrait de la bande originale de Pretty Woman).
